Halloween, a once year holiday anticipated to with excitement by children of all ages, and by the not so young people, is maybe the 2nd most popular holiday next only to Christmas. Observed every October 31st, the holiday is said to have its origins from the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday, All Saints' Day.
So why is the holiday so special for many people? During Halloween, the more popular activities are trick or treating, visiting haunted attractions, ghost tours, watching horror movies and the best of all, wearing Halloween outfits and attending costume parties. In other words, having fun and dressing up.
Children particularly look forward to trick or treating. They can’t wait to go house to house with their friends and collect all the treats they can get. They can of course go in their ordinary clothes but one of the thrills is finding out who has the best costume among their group. They also can be whatever they want to be, complete with costume, for one day of the year.
Adults, and teenagers, enjoys the holidays by going to costume parties. They may be too old for trick or treating but costume parties are perfect to get into the spirit of Halloween. Parties are often hosted by different groups or individuals and are the perfect place to have a great time. It’s also the perfect occasion to let loose and live out their fantasy characters.
When the wearing of costumes became popular for Halloween in the 1930s, costumes were usually those associated with the supernatural or scary creatures and monsters. Beings like vampires, witches, ghosts, devils and skeletons were, and are still, very popular.
Now however, Holloween costumes are not restricted to the usual scary themes. Science fiction, movie and super hero characters have become very popular. Such costumes like Darth Vader costumes, Marvel superhero costumes, Disney Halloween costumes, Batman Halloween costumes, Superman Halooween costumes, mermaid costumes and Princess costumes are favorites. These Halloween customes are perfect for anyone.
Pop culture figure costumes have also become popular these last few years. People like presidents, athletes, TV characters, actors and actresses are very common. Costumes portraying such people like Michael Jackson, Barack and Michelle Obama, Hanna Montana, Kate and Jon Gosselin (from Jon and Kate Plus 8), the High School Musical cast and Sarah Palin have become common.
Another emerging trend is for women, and sometimes men too, to use Halloween as an excuse to wear sexy Halloween outfits. There’s really no written rule on how or what Halloween outfit can and cannot be worn so many people take the opportunity to dress up in their Halloween outfit of choice.
